Wood’s Closed Back Shovels
The closed back feature makes available a shovel that combines the good features of the welded strap, the hollow back and the solid shank shovels, and overcomes the dis- advantages of each.
Wood’s Closed Back Shovel has a smooth blade, front and back—a resilient shank that is heat-treated. It has the lift or bend of a plain back shovel and the lightness of a hollow back shovel without the open space to which some workmen object. Handles are straight and easily replaced.
The manufacturer believes this shovel to be stronger in the shank than any other shovel, and invites its users to submit it to actual test in use on the toughest jobs. Work- men will like its trim, tapered socket and perfect balance.

Wood’s Arrow Point Shovels
The Arrow Point is an im- provement on the regular Round Point shovel construc- tion. The point enters the material like the bow of a boat In water and throws back the material more on the sides so that the greater wear takes place there and the shovel re- tains its sharp point and origi- nal shape.
This feature also makes shovelling easier as there is not so much resistance.
_Any round point shovel in size 2 can be furnished in the arrow point design at no extra charge.

Wood’s Mo-Lyb-Den-Um Steel Shovels
Designed and manufactured for service and economy and possessing these essentially important features.
HARDNEss.—Every shovel shows a Brinell Hardness of 460 to 512 under test, otherwise it is rejected. Steel at this degree of hardness shows the least abrasive wear. Blades can be made harder or softer, but scientific tests have proven the above range of figures to be best.
TouGcHness.—It is impractical to manufacture a shovel blade that is hard but brittle. ‘Toughness is as essential as hardness. Shovels are always being subjected to strains for prying purposes, therefore, the blade must be tough. Molyb- denum steel, treated by the Wood special process, combines both of these qualities to a degree which other steels do not. Molybdenum blades will not crack nor split in use.
StreENGTH.—The proportion of strength and weight in a shovel blade made of Wood process treated Molybdenum steel is such that a laborer handles more material with less effort than is possible with any other type of shovel. The tensile strength of Wood treated Molybdenum steel is 270,000 to 300,000 pounds, making possible the production of a shovel blade equal to and greater in strength than blades of other steels and yet of less weight. The Wood 14-gauge blade is stronger than the ordinary 12-gauge steel blade. The Wood shovel is from six ounces to more than a pound lighter than competitive grade shovels. It is easy to approximate the in- creased efficiency derived from this.
UNIFORMITY AND WORKMANSHIP.—Perfect uniformity was one of the specifications for the special process Molybdenum steel to be developed for the Wood shovel. So successfully is this uniformity provided for that the same degree of hard- ness and toughness prevails over the whole blade, and not only in one blade, but in 100 per cent of the output.
The workmanship and finish is of the best quality.
With Step
This new feature provides an easier rest for the workman’s foot, relieving the pressure of the sharp shoulder of the blade and saving one or two pair of shoes annually.
It stiffens and overcomes the flexibility of the blade when prying objects. The turned over shoulder of the blade which forms the step acts as a reinforcement in the form of an angle and prevents the straps from pulling loose from the blade as sometimes occurs in welded strap shovels.

In designing the Moly-D handle two well known principles were incorporated. The first is that a stick of wood is much stronger when a strain is placed against the grain than when applied to it. Any boy hits a ball against the grain of a bat not with it. The second idea came from the hub-band of a wagon wheel. To produce the strongest grip for a band, the blacksmith shrunk the iron or steel band on the hub, and it never gave way.
In this new shovel handle, the grain is perpendicular to the blade or grip and the strain is against the grain, making it almost unbreakable.
The steel band is compressed around the ends of the prongs and in a groove of the grip. The prongs are reinforced by the corrugated steel caps. The prongs are carried to the end, full size, or practically one-half the size of the stem.
There are no rivets to weaken either the prongs or the grip. ‘The compressed annealed steel band grips tighter and tighter, similar to being heated and shrunk on.
There is practically no metal around the grip to come in contact with the hand, thereby preventing freezing and clinging in cold weather. Grip is wider than standard handles,
The Moly-D handle is standard on the Wood Molybdenum steel shovel and will be furnished unless otherwise specified.
